Opportunities for Ukrainian Electricity Suppliers Following Synchronization with ENTSO-E
05.04.24
Since March 16, 2022, the Ukrainian power system has been operating synchronously with the continental European power grid ENTSO-E. Since then, NEC Ukrenergo, together with system operators of neighboring countries, has begun to gradually restore the export of electricity:
– March 30 – to Poland (210 MW per hour);
– May 12 – to Moldova (600 MW per hour);
– June 30 – to Romania (100 MW per hour).
As of March 1, 2024, the maximum export limit for electricity from Ukraine and Moldova to EU countries has been increased to 550 MW per hour. This decision was made by the operators of the continental European power grid ENTSO-E, increasing the export capacity of interstate interconnectors by 150 MW. This capacity is equivalent to the operation of one additional unit of a thermal power plant.
Until recently, only the Burshtyn energy island (Zakarpatska, part of Lviv and part of Ivano-Frankivsk regions) was synchronized with the European network of electricity transmission system operators (ENTSO-E), while the rest of the network was synchronized with the power systems of Russia and Belarus. Due to this situation, access to export-import operations for many market participants was significantly limited. Now, the entire power grid is synchronized with ENTSO-E, which means that:
– producers from any region of Ukraine can export electricity to Europe;
– traders can freely conduct arbitrage between national markets;
– Ukrainian suppliers have the opportunity to sell electricity to European consumers.
