Gas generation
STEM Capital — implementation of modern solutions in the field of alternative mobile gas-fired electricity generation
Implemented projects
Sector Overview
Since 2022, the Ukrainian energy system has been under constant attack and destruction. One of the ways to overcome the consequences of military aggression is the construction of alternative mobile gas turbine and gas piston power plants.
The Government plans to build and commission 5 GW of maneuvering gas generation. Such a project has 2 advantages at once: in the short term, gas generation solves the problems of electricity shortage, and in the long term, it allows you to create a system for balancing the transition to renewable energy sources.
Opportunities
Existing pipeline infrastructure
- The decline in the gas transportation business is stimulating Ukrainian pipeline operators to develop new business models
Potential of transport corridors
- There is a prospect of creating a hydrogen highway through central Europe
Ukraine's Hydrogen Energy Strategy
- Within the framework of the 2*40 GW initiative, Hydrogen Europe has proposed a strategy for the development of the hydrogen economy in Europe, including the installation of capacities in Ukraine
Mobility of gas generation
Gas stations are small in size, so in the event of critical damage to the energy infrastructure, they can be quickly moved by ground transport. This allows the state to quickly resolve issues of powering critically important facilities.
2
High efficiency of cogeneration (electricity + heat)
The excess heat generated during electricity generation can be used to heat homes, industrial facilities, and social infrastructure. Given the problem of old boiler houses in many cities, cogeneration plants can serve as a solution to two issues at once: high-quality and reliable supply of electricity and heat.
3
Maneuver generation
The development of alternative energy sources caused the problem of balancing the system even before the war. The growth of the share of renewables, the production of which is not stable and depends on external conditions, creates the need for maneuverable stations that can cover the shortage and at the same time work without problems with shutdowns. Gas generation helps to solve this issue, that is, it will remain relevant even after the end of hostilities.

The global strategy for the development of Ukraine’s energy sector involves the development of decentralized generation. Gas generation (gas turbine and gas piston stations with a capacity of 10 kW to 500 MW) is the most effective for implementing this strategy. A system built on this principle can be instantly turned on and off, and is also less vulnerable to missile attacks.
Risks
Connection to gas, electricity, and heat networks
To install a gas station, you need not only a plot of land, but also access to gas, electricity, and heat networks. Often, there are issues with the connected capacity, construction of additional distribution systems, and substations, which makes the project more expensive and, in some cases, technically impossible.
High noise level
Gas stations (especially gas turbines) create noise during operation. Therefore, according to sanitary standards, they must be located at least 200 meters from residential buildings.
